Turks & Caicos...Eating my way from one Bay or Cay to the next!!! (Birthday #32)



Hemingway's Restaurant @ Sands Resort, Grace Bay



Hemingway's was my first treat upon landing in Provo.  The staff were fantastic!  Greeting all customers with smiles and cheerfulness.  The staff even gave out a few hugs here and there to the regulars (of which my host was one)!  Carolyn provided excellent, attentive service.

There were scattered showers, so we sat under the hut near the main bar.  However, umbrella-shaded tables were available out on the deck closer to the oceanfront.

I started with a rum punch which was refreshing after experiencing a 40 degree increase in temperature and huge spike in humidity.  I went with the Spinach salad with grilled chicken.  I mixed a bit of the raspberry vinaigrette (which was tasty but a bit too sweet for me) with their thick Caesar dressing.  The match worked!  The salad was topped with crumbled bleu cheese, red peppers, walnuts, pear, tomato, cucumbers, carrots, and a large grilled chicken breast.  It was fresh and delicious.  My friend enjoyed a salad as well, topped with jumbo grilled shrimp and a grilled chicken breast.  

DINNER:

Hemingway’s deck dining in the evening is divine.  Expect for one cute property cat to be your guest.  He may even climb a palm tree for your amusement!  The goat cheese and spinach stuffed chicken breast was fantastic.  Served over peas and rice and topped with a rosemary and herb infused champagne cream sauce, this meal is sure to please!  The Thai stir fry with chicken was o.k, but not spectacular.  Again, the rum punch is great, but will sneak up on you so sip slowly :0)

Dinner #2:
I enjoyed the curry chicken dish on my last evening in town.  The chicken was cooked perfectly and the curry sauce drizzled over it was divine.  This dish was served with steamed mixed veggies, peas and rice, and fried plantains.  I also tried a green "Rasta" cocktail which contained rum, pineapple juice, grenadine, and blue curacao.  Yummy!

Hemingway's quickly became a favorite dining destination for me, having dined there 3 times in 7 days!




Mango Reef Restaurant at The Alexandra Resort & Spa

The view at Mango Reef…AMAZING!!!  We dined on one of the decks overlooking the beautiful turquoise water.  Of course many of the properties I visited throughout the week provided beachside dining, yet the view at The Alexandra was spectacular!  The area was shaded by modern horizontal criss-crossed shades above the dining area versus more traditional individual umbrellas per table.   Service was quick and polite.  We started with the Sweet Chili wings which were crispy and perfectly sweet, spicy, and saucy.  My oxtails!!!!.....what can I say?  I was blown away!  Now, I’ve had oxtails before, but nothing like this dish.    The oxtails were huge and very meaty, bathed in an perfect thickened jus and vegetables (snap peas, bell peppers, carrots, and corn).  It was served with moist peas and rice which soaked up the jus nicely.  This large portion was perfect for splitting between lunch and dinner.  My friend had a shrimp pasta (fettuccine) with tomato-based sauce.  This dish was also available with a cream-based sauce. The shrimp were jumbo and the sauce was accented with fresh herbs.

Luna Sea Pool Bar/Grill @ The Somerset Resort on Grace Bay
The sunken in pool bar was quaint, the service was so-so, and the grill behind the bar smelled as if it could use a good cleaning.  The smoke was a bit distracting when you’re out enjoying the fresh air. The conch in the fritters was a bit too chewy for my liking.  The fritters tasted microwaved vs. newly deep-fried.  I did enjoy the spicy remoulade dipping sauce.  The chicken club sandwich was good.  Not much could go wrong there.  The chick breast was moist and the shoe string fries served hot.  The menu here is pretty plain but I enjoyed my light lunch nonetheless.

 Vino Tiempo Wine Bar, Grace Bay:

Came here for a late night cocktail and tapas with friends after a beautiful birthday party in the penthouse of the Seven Stars Resort, Grace Bay
Lobster empanadas!  So fantastic!  The crust was perfectly flaky and not greasy at all…the spicy lobster filling was fantastic….fresh and seasoned well.  The beef patties also delighted my palate; served with a sriracha-based dipping sauce, these really hit the spot.  The hummus was so-so, served with disappointingly cool and hard pita bread triangles which upon request were replaced with room temperature crostinis.  Maybe it was the late hour, but this was at least the only disappointment I experienced at Vino Tiempo.
Our service was pretty good and the crowd was upbeat with a good mix of ages.  Vino Tiempo is a great place for a small gathering with friends in a lounge setting with decent music.

Parrot Cay (Private Island/Resort)

The boat ride over is a thrill in and of itself!  Passing other private islands on the way and having a personal tour guide (Thanks Captain Marley!) to key you in on the property owners such as Donna Karan, Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, etc. was a kick.






 

Lunch: Grilled spiced salmon over cauliflower, quinoa, and pomegranate tabbouleh with a smoky eggplant puree.  Fresh, fresh, fresh.  This was listed on the Spa Menu (along with other healthy choices such as: zucchini, tomato and pine nut “ricotta” lasagna, pumpkin and macadamian nut crusted pizzeta with mango, tomato, avocado, pineapple, and basil, and a 7 grain veggie burger with tomato and avocado salsa, sprouts, and spa slaw.


The grilled salmon was flavorful, moist, and delicate; perfectly cooked over quinoa, chopped cauliflower, pomegranate seeds, and few red onions.  The eggplant puree was wonderfully smoky and a perfect accompaniment to this super refreshing light dish.  In keeping with the refreshing lunch, I had a Cucumber-tini made with Absolut vodka and Sake; garnished with vodka-infused cucumbers.  Delightful.  I also had a bite of the veggie burger.  It had great flavor and texture on a soft bun.  The tomato + avocado salsa was a nice touch.

 Opus Restaurant @ Ocean Club East Resort



Opus was a visually spectacular property with dim lighting and candles indoors and every tree wrapped in white lights outdoors.  The service was fantastic and consisted of mostly very young, very polite staff.  Opus features a live band on the outdoor patio nightly as well.  They offer complimentary bruschetta to start which is a nice change from your basic dinner roll or Italian bread.

The lobster fettuccine with tomato sauce was excellent.  The sauce was rich and full of chunky stewed tomatoes, red and green bell peppers, and sweet onion.  There was a generous portion of lobster meet throughout.  The dish could have had a bit more fettuccine, but all in all, this was a fantastic meal!

Local Fare!
Middle Caicos Café:
This family owned café featured large portioned specials such as oxtails, curried chicken, pork or chicken souse and sides such as cole slaw, backed macaroni & cheese (Caribbean style of course).  I indulged on a baked chicken which was so tender and moist, it practically fell away from the bone; served with peas and rice and traditional Caribbean-style baked mac n’ cheese.  If you are not familiar with Caribbean-style baked mac n’cheese, you are in for a treat once you try it.  It’s nothing like your soupy American restaurant macaroni and cheese.  This mac n’ cheese has a bit more flair…featuring vegetables and herbs baked in. It usually is pretty dry, but not unappealingly so. 
I washed this meal down with Bambarra Rum (Reserve) with a splash of ginger ale.

A Hole in the Wall
Another local’s watering hole worth diving into for lunch or dinner.  Here the oxtails were pretty good, but not nearly as flavorful as those at Mango Reef, nor as plentiful.  The peas and rice here were a bit dry, but not a terrible disappointment.  Service was slow, but polite once you received it.   The potato salad was creamy and potatoes cooked well.  It was actually pretty good!  My friend had the chicken soup, which was actually more like a chicken stew with its thick curried base, potatoes and dumplings.  I had to take an order to go!
They have a full bar at which local men and women were ordering red stripes and winding down from a hard day’s work.  They also have outdoor dining on an open deck area. The indoor dining boasts about ten to twelve tables and a flat screen in the corner.

All-in-all TCI is a beautiful place to visit, if only to see the majestic turquoise ocean meeting the beautiful white sand!  
The people are kind and warm, the culture rich, the landscape breathtaking!

Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant, 389 Centre St., Boston (Jamaica Plain), MA

Whether you ask for ...Wet or Wat or Wot...you are in for a treat!

Blue Nile is a quaint, lowkey, authentic Ethiopian fare bungalow.  Nestled in a perfect nook of blended ethnic foods, Blue Nile doesn't quite stand out on the strip in Hyde Square unless you are a restaurant competing for patrons or this is a neighborhood you walk through often or reside within; but once you walk through the doors, Blue Nile stands out as the warm, cozy, blog-worthy restaurant you realize you've had the good fortune of noticing and venturing through the doors.

There are 9-10 tables within this super small space, yet they are placed smartly where patrons' conversations are not intrusive, but simply chatter amongst the small crowd.  This place could easily provoke uncomfortable moments of tapping elbows or rolling eyes at a the loud-talkers one table over, but the music and the smiles upon the faces of your servers and fellow diners quells those tendencies.

I recommend not arriving with hunger pangs that may lead to crankiness...these meals from the starters to the entrees are made to order and if you sneak a peek into the kitchen as the swinging door is slightly ajar, you can read "passionate, hard-at-work chef" on the faces of these cooks.

Since I didn't notice a traditional honey wine on the drink menu, I did have a couple of glasses of Cabernet.  The wine list was significantly inexpensive with glasses going for $3.50 and bottles for $19.99!!!

I love the communal eating style of Ethiopian cuisine. We stared with a spinach sambusa, served piping hot; fried perfectly golden brown.  The filling was rich and spiced well...the perfect starter.
Blue Nile's injera was wonderfully tangy and moist.  We enjoyed ours with Doro Wet...tender, moist chicken leg and pulled pieces stewed in traditional, spicy bebere chili sauce and herb butter (not overdone), accomanied by a hard boiled egg, yellow peas, and chilled potato.
 The derek tibs were cooked nicely.


Can't wait to try the vegetable sampler next.  It looked amazing!

Felt, 533 Washington St, Boston, MA (Downtown Crossing)

I FELT extreme disappointment with my experience dining here (corny pun, I know).

Service:

Our server was flighty and clearly inexperienced in the industry. 
I ordered sauteed mushrooms as a side dish with my chicken and mash entree...she proceeded to bring them out as an entree.  Her pacing was awful to the point where the 'manager' began to help out with our table and the other FOUR (yes, only FOUR) other tables.

We were enticed into Felt with a BuywithMe certificate and the online menu looked decent enough.  The server was not sure what to do with the certificate...ok, fair enough, maybe she's never processed one before (but I'm a veteran with these things and have never experienced that before)  it was as if I handed her some old school foodstamps as payment....deer in the headlights!

The manager eventually comes over and tries to convince us that Buywithme defrauded the company and sold certificates without their consent....hmmmm, that's a new one. 
He decided to 'honor the certificate anyway'.  Oh, gee, thanks!

Anywho...the food:

The stuffed mushrooms tasted like canned 'shrooms and were over-salted, as was my chicken, and the other entree which consisted of some type of goat or feta cheese and crostini creation.  The mushrooms were not actually stuffed since they were small and still had the stems (not stuffed caps) with tomato and other stuff dumped on top.  The mash that came with my chicken entree was thin and tasted like watery boxed potatoes. My dining companion said his chicken sandwich was dry...overall, the quality of the meal was amateur at best.  The velvet seats in the dining booths were dirty and stained (wish I'd wished I noticed before sitting down to eat).  This place is just gross!   
Thank goodness we didn't pay full price for this disaster of a meal!

I contacted Buywithme regarding Felt's accusations.  They investigated and found this to be a false claim and refunded my money spent on the certificate.

(Now Closed) Mantra (Indian Cuisine), 52 Temple Place, Boston, MA (Downtown Crossing)

I usually have decent things to say about Mantra, but on Tuesday night (3/1/2011) I had a reservation via opentable.com at 7:30, was not seated until after 8:00 and the service was extremely slow with poor pacing between courses. We did not receive our food until almost 9:30 and the appetizer order was incorrect. Even my side dish came after I was halfway done with my filet mignon. I'm not sure if I will return or recommend Mantra again as I have so many times in the past.
If anything, I'd recommend having dinner at the bar.

7/2011:

I had a friend visiting from Turks & Caicos and we were milling around looking for lunch on a Saturday in Downtown Crossing since Kingston Station was not open at the time.  So, I decide to head into Mantra.
My new recommendation is that the lunch buffet is THE best time to go to Mantra!  The spread was pretty great and there's no need to worry about receiving poor service!  The price was decent at $12 from 11:30-2:30 daily.
The buffet has okra dishes (masala and fried), chicken tikka masala, vegetable fritters,vegetable biryani, tandoori chicken....all the favorite staples.

Victoria's Diner, 1024 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA (Newmarket Square)

On weekends, the crowd waiting usually looks more intimidating than it really is....likely because I usually only go with one other person and the other parties are waiting for a 4 top.  The omelets are the best! The Italian, the Spanish, the Florentine, Lumberjack...I love them all.  The fillings are not sparse in the least. Their french toast is pretty good, the pancakes (or as they are annoyingly misspelled  on the in-house menus "Pankakes") can be a bit too dense for my liking.
The homefries are to die for!!!  Victoria's serves chunky, soft, and buttery skin-on potatoes!
If you care to imbibe with your meal, Victoria's has a decent bar selection as well.  Super late night hours are a pretty awesome plus as well!  Great for late night cravings!
Their service is always prompt and polite, the location may cause parking to be an issue, but it's survivable.

Quick Tip:  If you are dining with 2-3 other people, there's a wait, and there's space at the bar, simply walk in and grab those seats; they are self-seat only!

Appetito (Italian Cuisine), 761 Beacon St Newton, MA

I enjoyed my meal here.  The service was slow once the dining area filled up (we sat at the bar)...they seemed to severely understaffed.

The specials were so numerous I simply couldn't keep track and ordered from the menu instead.  I suggest if they continue to have so many 'specials' they print a 'Special's Menu".

I started with the Sashimi over a bed of greens.  It was pretty good, but it seems it sat around a bit prior to bringing it to me since the wasabi drizzle over the tuna appeared dried on!  The salad was fresh.  The tobiko was barely detectable (and I LOVE tobiko)...

I thought the bread could have been toasted a bit more; the hummus was pretty good.

My pasta dish was really good (Pollo Salcicca).  My friend had the Capellini which was good as well.
The gentleman next to me had the cod special which looked fantastic, though the bowl of pasta it came with looked pretty undesirable.

I would go back to sample other dishes.

My all time place to stay in PR is in Fajardo (The phenomenal El Conquistador, a Waldorf Astoria Property, www.elconresort.com  ).  It's the ultimate!!! I staying is San Juan...read on!

Beautiful hotel!  I love and trust Intercontinental hotels around the globe.  This is one of my favorite places to stay in Puerto Rico, next to the El Conquistador in Fajardo!
The rooms are clean and spacious with exceptional oceanfront views!  The staff (front desk, wait staff, and maintenance crew) are all extremely amicable and helpful!
Even though during our last visit, we were a bit delayed on check-in as our room was prepared, we simply had a bite to eat and a cocktail at the beach front restaurant and even received an awesome upgrade for our trouble.

The location/neighborhood is pretty basic, but if you intend to relax at one of the property's four restaurants, few bars (indoor and out), couple of pools, or the spa, you will not be hard-pressed to venture out into the neighborhood.  It's a quick ride from the airport also (<2 miles).

Ruth's Chris steakhouse is on-site if you enjoy keeping to a typical diet on vacation, their Alfredo's restaurant served decent Italian fare, and the Poolside fair wasn't exceptional.  For fantastic food, I suggest you check out the local spots or head to Old San Juan.
I last stayed here May 2010.

The poolside bars had great service also with decent bar fare served at your lounge chairs.

Bacco's Wine & Cheese, 31 St. James Avenue, Boston, MA 02116 (Back Bay)

Update:
4/2012. Recently purchased a beautiful triple creme (from Tanzania of all places) and caviar for a caviar and bubbly soiree I organized for a girls weekend on the Vineyard.  I also picked up a few bottles of wine, including my new fave J. Lohr's Merlot!

Bacco's is a beautiful hidden gem in Back Bay.  I happened upon it one afternoon after a nice dinner at SkipJack's and have since been back for their wine tasting.
The wine selection is fantastic, the cheese selections varied and seemingly innumerable!  The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable...Ian turned me on to a fantastic Trebbiano d'abruzzo a couple of weeks ago at a City Wine Tours stop!


I recently found out that they serve prepared meals (lunch and dinner) made fresh at Pigalle!  How fantastic is that???

I highly recommend going in for a wine and/or cheese tasting and grabbing a few of the other goodies (chutneys, Pigalle dishes, caviar, honey, and spreads)!

Legal Test Kitchen (Waterfront Location), 225 Northern Ave Boston, MA 02228

Though pretty standard fare, my PEI oysters for starters were fresh.  The paella was likely the best I've ever had in a restaurant.  The tomato-based sauce was an interesting twist.
The service was ok...nothing outstanding.   My primary complaint was that we sat outside, which was nice, but some idiot working inside who was goofing off ran into the tinted glass window several times.  I found it to be inappropriate, unprofessional, and downright annoying!  Oh and the loud-talkers, who arrived (thank goodness) just before we left were twice as annoying...but you can't help who they allow in :0)

I'd give the menu another shot before my next Yacht party or evening cruise out of the Harbor.  Possibly next week!

If restaurants are on http://opentable.com, I always make my reservations there, but for some reason ( I was told when I called) LTK does not take same day reservations ("no availability within 2.5 hrs...").  I found this to be odd since the vast majority of restaurants allow this and on a number of occasions I have made my reservation on the way to or outside of the restaurant (this is how I have nearly 20,000 points and am VIP on opentable),

It's not as if LTK is an exculsive NYC or LA restaurant where restaurants actually have the weight behind them to make such requests.  On top of it all, when we arrived, the restaurant was practically empty!
