Product Review: Mama Pearl's Gourmet Hot Sauce - Local Entrepreneur Launches Hot Sauce Company Based on Family Recipe

As a lifelong condiment-lover, I was excited to receive three flavors of Mama Pearl's hot sauce in a lovely gift box.  While my kitchen does not get much action (I'm an avid kitchen/cooking dodger), I tend to have lots of snacks, soups, and plenty of dining in/out meals, so while sampling the products may have taken awhile, it was well worth the research effort.

Mama Pearl's Gourmet Hot Sauce is a locally created and bottled hot sauce company out of Boston, MA.  Made with all natural and organic ingredients, you can really see the authenticity with every fleck of seeds and herbs when pouring Mama Pearl's sauces over your favorite dishes and snacks.

How did these products come to be?

" Alix Hogu, the entrepreneur that launched “Mama Pearl’s,” a locally bottled hot sauce company in the Boston, MA area, there are only a few “a-ha” moments in life; for him that moment came at a family dinner in November of 2011.

While sitting down for a family meal, Alix, a self-proclaimed “chili head” and serious lover of all things spicy, asked if there was any hot sauce to accompany the meal. His Mother remarked, “Why you don’t try some of Pearl’s hot sauce.”  The “Pearl” in question was Alix’s Mother-in-law from Trinidad. She had been making the spicy condiment for family and friends for years without a second thought. “I’ll try it,” thought Alix and he drizzled the savory green sauce over his dinner plate.

The simple recipe made of habanero and jalapeno peppers, cilantro, garlic, salt and vinegar brought every taste bud in Alix’s mouth life. Without pause, Alix proclaimed Mama Pearl’s Hot Sauce!” And the table became immediately still. The newly dubbed “Mama Pearl” sitting across the table smiled at him. He recounts that as the moment the brand came to life. The rest is history. "

Fresa Flavor

Described best as sweet heat.  Boasting fruity, bright flavors with added heat from habanero peppers, this moderately hot sauce was my favorite of the lot.  I added it to a Manhattan-style clam chowder, a crab and corn stew, and ,as with all three flavors, it went well simply poured over kettle potato or tortilla chips.

Mild

Great balance with gentle heat across the palate, the Mild flavor can enhance the blandest of dishes and sauces as well as brighten those with existing character.

Original (Classic Caribbean)

This peppery, habanero and jalapeno green sauce has great substance and bite.  A forward punch and mid-palate acidity, that finishes with a perfect heat, I enjoyed this sauce on both beef and seafood.

If you're not afraid of a little heat (and even if you are), you've gotta try Mama Pearl's!  Check the website, here, for local distributors.  You can also order products online.
