David Burke Townhouse-Upper East Side, Manhattan

October 2011

So happy I made it back!
It's always a thrill to walk into the main dining room full of whimsical decor from a statue of a jester doing a handstand, to the blown glass cylindrical "balloons" over the fireplace, glass balloons on the ceiling in the hallway, and various pictures of birds and keys, and whatnot!

Though the popover rolls were not being served at the time of our arrival and I was later tortured as they were served to other patrons, my meal was splendid.  First our host was spectacular!  Maurizia is fantabulous!  He was super attentive, friendly, knowledgeable and even complimented my pearls (blush*)
Did I mention, I was wearing all black and requested a black napkin...they did not have one on-site so Maurizia sent a server to the restaurant next door to satisfy my request...NOW THAT'S SERVICE!

The pretzel-encrusted crab cake was brilliant and boasted a lovely freshly baked pretzel 'coffin' with lump crab meat buried inside.  The tomato-orange chutney was perfectly sweet and savory!

The salmon and big eye tuna tartare parfait was light and fresh.  the creme fraiche was a lovely touch and the accompaniments were interesting:  spicy mustard, soy, and herb + oil for dipping.

The hanger steak and eggs were lovely: a perfectly seared fried egg sat atop perfectly cooked steak with  wonderfully-seasoned potato hash and bearnaise sauce.

While I am not a fan of shitake mushrooms, I enjoyed a quick bite of the handmade cavatelli topped with shitake mushroom, a cream sauce, and crisp shitake mushroom shavings.

The pumpkin parfait was a perfect ending to a fantastic meal and the sage ice cream was SO AMAZING!  Herbal ice creams and cocktails are here to stay if you ask me!
